Seniors Who Rock
ACTION TO TAKE
Shake your booty.
WHY
It started as a BBC documentary on seniors who were unhappy with being isolated in their homes or unhappy with nursing home living. It led to forming a 40 member rock band whose video has been seen more than 2 million times on YouTube and MySpace and who has appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The group has requests for appearances in more than 50 countries.
The Zimmers did a remake of The Who’s My Generation (click this link to hear it) at Abbey Road Studios (where the Beatles recorded albums). As the video’s intro says, “Together they make Abbey Road Rock.” Lead singer Alfie Carretta is 90. His lyrics include, “I hope I die before I get old.”
The high energy video darts from scene to scene like a typical MTV video. The video includes humor and guitar smashing. (I guess adding years doesn’t always bring maturity.) The video ends with a middle finger salute from 100 year old drummer Buster Martin.
In short the video is fun because the band members have so much fun and energy – and a reminder that 90 or 100 doesn’t necessarily mean old.
P.S. Several members are now regular video bloggers.
Quotes
Old people in this country are just brushed to one side, like rubbish, past our sell-by date.
~Alfie Carretta
Humor
The band that puts the hip into hip replacement. Will their next song be “When I’m 164?”
