What's the key to a woman's health?
The vast majority of website information on women’s health is about magic pills, magic diets, and magic exercises. The compass and impetus for a woman’s health, aging, and beauty however, are on the inside. We all would like a magic pill to make us look and feel younger and happier. The real magic has been within you the whole time.
The change can be quick, painless, and profound—if you know how. The anti aging secret to women's health starts on the inside with your Anti Aging ABCs—your Attitudes, Beliefs, and Coping Skills.
Your anti-aging ABCs have a profound effect on your health and on:
  • how you look
  • how you feel
  • how you age
The two best sources of anti aging information come from:
  • studying vital centenarians—people 100 and older who have a sparkle in their eyes, a snap in their step, are sharp mentally and physically, and exude vitality
  • an objective, unbiased review and analysis of the best research on health, proactive health, and healthy aging

I'm Dr. Michael Brickey, President of The Ageless Lifestyles Institute. When I turned 50, I became consumed with discovering why some people look and much feel younger than their calendar age. You know the kind of people who exude vitality and resiliently shed stress? And women over 100 who write books, dance, sculpt, teach, and compete in sports. They must be doing something different. Sure enough they do. For example, pictured on the right is Dr. Leila Denmark, still practicing medicine at 103.

So what are their anti-aging secrets?

When someone turns 100, reporters often ask their anti-aging secret. Usually, they don't know. They may guess something like, "Broccoli, broccoli and red wine. That's my secret." As a group, however, their secrets are apparent. It's not magic pills, magic diets, or extreme exercise regimes. Could it be genetics? Studies comparing identical and fraternal twins found that only 30% of longevity is genetic. That means that 70% is mental and lifestyle. Adopt their beliefs and you too can look and feel younger and more vital well into your hundreds.

Your Anti-Aging ABCs: A is for Attitude

What if you could adopt or hone an attitude that would help you be healthier, happier, have more friends, live longer, and be more successful? Research is clear that optimism does this. If you should become ill, your chances of overcoming the illness are higher if you are an optimist. For example, optimistic women who had breast cancer had a better survival rate.

The good news is that optimism is very learnable. It involves tweaking your perspective. As your optimism increases, so does your enjoyment of life. Optimism is one of four attitudes that are especially helpful in women living longer and healthier and happier lives.

Your Anti-Aging ABCs: B is for Beliefs

A librarian told me that she mentioned to her (chronologically younger) staff that she was over fifty. Ever since they have been treating her differently. They leave her off key committees. If they mention a celebrity like Jennifer Lopez, they quickly apologize for mentioning someone she “wouldn't know.” When you tell people your age, they pull out their stereotypes and expect you to act your age. Acting your age is a fast track to aging. What to do instead?

So what do you say? I love Bob Hope's answer. He says he is many ages. There are times when I want to play with my three-year-old twins like I too am a kid too. There are times when I want to play ball like a 20-year-old. And there are times when I want to give mature sagely advice to my teenagers (and fantasize they will heed it). The trick is shifting to whatever age the occasion calls for. As we add years, our repertoire of ages gets richer and richer. Believing you are many ages (vs. whatever your calendar age is) can make a big difference in your outlook on life. When combined with the other anti aging beliefs, it profoundly helps you be vital, flexible, and resourceful.

Your Anti-Aging ABCs: C is for Coping Skills

Sooner or later, people you love will die. People often get stuck in grieving. They may picture mom in the hospital, all 80 pounds of her with tubes everywhere. Or they see everyone gathered around the dinner table at Christmas and there is the empty chair where momma is supposed to be. Those images are not about mom’s fine qualities, love, and parenting and don’t do her or you justice.

There are many ways to effectively deal with death. My favorite role model is Fred Sanford from the TV program Sanford and Son. Remember what Fred would do when he was having a difficult time? He would hold his hand on his chest, raise his other arm, look up and say, “I’m coming Elizabeth. This is the big one” (a heart attack). He then talked to Elizabeth like she was right there—a living presence in his life. He shared his problems and passions. He probably got along better with her after she died as he was quite cantankerous.

What a wonderful way to deal with death! Fred was a simple guy. If he can see a deceased loved one as a living presence in his life, you can too. There are many other ways to effectively deal with loss. What is vital is that you have grieving coping skills that work for you. Coping well with loved ones dying is one of the four critical coping skills for women’s health.

Anti-Aging question: Can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

How about George Dawson, an African-American who dropped out of school in the 8th grade?
He got tired of signing his name with an X and learned to read and write at age 98. He co-wrote
his autobiography at 102. Selma Plautt (pictured on the left) enrolled at the University of Toronto
at 92 and graduated at 100. A Nazi refugee, English wasn't even her native language.

Anti-Aging secret: Cultivating positive memories

Vital centenarians (people more than 100 years old) have twice as many positive memories as negative memories. Like a gardener lovingly caring for flowers, they recall and retell the good memories again and again with enthusiasm and flourish. Family and friends ask to hear about them again and again. They let the painful memories wither. Better yet, they see the humor in what were at the time painful experiences. It can make a huge difference in your outlook. Combined with the other Anti-Aging ABCs, it makes a profound difference in feeling good about yourself and your life. Pictured is England's beloved centenarian Queen Mother who had a busy schedule until the last year of her life.

Anti-Aging secret: How can the change be fast and effortless?

Imagine how you would feel if you knew your husband or best friend was lying to you and doing things behind your back. Angry? Resentful? Paranoid? Then you come home one night and "Surprise!" The secret scheming was to throw you a surprise party. In a heartbeat your emotions change to surprise, guilt, and enjoyment. Instantly your beliefs and feelings about their behavior changes for good. My system identifies the attitudes, beliefs, and coping skills that foster inner beauty and defy aging. It backs them up with data and common sense that give you an "of course" feeling. Typically, the changes lock in and become permanent. Like compound interest, they just keep giving and giving.

Quickly and Profoundly?

In the movie It's a Wonderful Life, George Bailey was ready to take his own life. Rethinking what the future would be like without him gave him a purpose and mission. Nothing had changed and yet everything changed that fateful night. In Star Wars, Luke's life changed radically just by getting some information—that Darth Vader was his father and Princess Leia his sister. Changing your mind can happen quickly and profoundly.

Nauseated by Affirmations?

Do you groan when you hear affirmations like, "Every day and every way I am getting better and better." In my experience affirmations usually don't stick unless the foundation fits well with the affirmation. The Ageless Lifestyles concepts build credible, data-based, common sense, ABCs. Consequently, you intuitively believe them rather than trying to convince yourself by repetition.

Don't have to meditate?

I love Deepak Chopra. He mesmerizes audiences, including myself, with his presence, integrity, and charisma. Afterwards, however, most of us don't do much about what he teaches because adopting an Eastern philosophy, or even meditating, is a big stretch for most Americans. I developed my ABCs (Attitudes, Beliefs, and Coping Skills) from modeling the ABCs of vital centenarians, an in-depth study of the best research on aging, and my own decades of clinical experience as a psychologist. The approach is easy for Western minds to grasp and use. You might say I am a Western alternative to Chopra.

Real life examples

Normally I can’t talk about the people I coach because their coaching is confidential. These three women, however, had their life makeover stories featured in six issues of Let’s Live magazine.

I just wanted to formally thank you for your extraordinarily helpful coaching. Last year was one of the most challenging years of my life. Your coaching helped make it one of the best years of my life... Wow do I feel better about myself. I used to be a wallflower, hanging back, rarely initiating conversations. I thought, who would be interested in some overweight lady? Now I feel confident and interesting and don't hesitate to initiate conversations.
—Patty Harris, one of three women I coached whose life makeover stories were featured in six issues of Let's Live magazine.

I am writing to thank you for the superb coaching you did with me and for helping me become master of my life and my emotions. I’ve come to believe that I make my own breaks and things are getting better all the time. Talking my way to Hawaii is a good example. When things aren’t working, I try another way. And as I am now fond of saying, “Once I get Rocking, I’m Rolling.”

Our coaching helped me redefine who I am. Rather than often wondering if I fit in, I now feel like I can talk to anybody about anything—from family to highbrow to lowbrow to people from different countries. I now see myself as a “natural anthropologist”—easily relating well in any culture. And, of course, being a talented anthropologist fits well with my eclectic tastes. I really like the Sharon I am becoming. In my personal life and in my career I am now writing my own script rather than continuing with some scripts that were around since junior high school years.
—Sharon Boone

I want to thank you for your great coaching. Last year was a turning point in my life in many ways—and your coaching was a big part of the changes.

First was taking charge of my health by getting in shape, eating better, and most of all becoming a non-smoker for life. I look back now and it is hard to believe that I wasn’t taking better care of myself. The triathlon symbolized the triumph in the trifold areas—eating, exercise, and smoking. I was especially proud of keeping my personal goal of doing the triathlon when I was age 40.
—Anne Kirby

Anti aging question: Are you ready to live decades longer than your parents?

Americans' life spans have increased 64% in the last century. When Social Security started, the average lifespan was 62. Thus most Americans were not living long enough to collect it. American women’s lifespan is now 79 years and continuing to rise. Genetic engineering, tissue engineering, and other medical advances are going to continue to conquer diseases, increase our life spans, and help us look younger. It is more important than ever that we be crystal clear about who we are, what we want, why, and how to achieve it, and to postpone aging.

Robert Frost wrote of how:

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood...
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

You have a choice. You can follow the interstate highway of health and aging that typically brings declining health and vitality and perhaps a nursing home. Or, you can blaze a trail that will help you live healthier, happier, and longer. It starts on the inside.
